Why are there add-ons on the UTV packages? Do I need that stuff?
Why don't you sell shocks?
Why don't you sell spring kits?
How often should my shocks be rebuilt?
For you weekend warriors, an annual rebuild is sufficient. Offroad only rigs? I recommend 40-50 hours between each service. As for you racers, getting your shocks rebuilt before every race will ensure top race performance and should be an essential part of your routine race prep.
So many times I see shocks come in that have not been serviced in years and I cringe every single time. There is absolutely no fluid left in them or if there is, it is charcoal black, and the inner workings are completely wasted. I am telling you, there is nothing worse than watching someone who has paid hard earned money for coilovers/bypasses, not take the time and the money to maintain them.
The problem and danger with going too long between rebuilds especially when pushing your car or bike to it's limits is the high probablity of experiencing fluid degradation. When fluid gets hot from general use, the fluid breaks down. As it breaks down, it becomes thinner which causes inconsistent and unpredictable dampening and rebound. This can ultimately cause bottoming out, rear end bucking, and an increased amount of deflection.
The bottom line is that shocks are expensive so take care of them!

Does shock tuning really matter?
Absolutely...100%...guaranteed! No matter how powerful the engine is on your offroad vehicle, the contact with the ground is what will give you the traction to propel you forward. That is why every time your tires leave the ground, your overall speed decreases. Properly tuned suspension forces the tires to constantly remain in contact with the dirt below. This allows you to really hammer down and be confident that you will be safe doing it. In a racing application, more contact and traction through shock tuning, will decrease your lap times substantially...no question!

Factor 55's caption explains it perfectly:
"Many of you may have already seen this video but we are still amazed by the commitment of the driver. For most of us weekend recreational rock crawler/off roaders, shock tuning is foreign. We simply install our shocks and maybe adjust the compression damping. But for the recent King of The Hammers competitors, shock tuning is essential to remain competitive. Check out this video of the Outer Bounds Racing’s Geiser Bros Trophy Truck committing to a high speed pass in the Aussie whoops." |
